Can diseased plants go in the compost?
Home compost rarely proves that every part reached a pathogen-killing temperature, so diagnosis and local disposal options should drive the decision.

When the problem is infectious or uncertain, the safest home-garden rule is to keep affected material out of a cool or unmanaged compost pile. Use the disposal route recommended locally. Healthy crop residue and purely physiological damage can usually be composted; persistent soil-borne problems, viruses and easily spread infected tissue deserve extra caution.
Start with the diagnosis
A scorched, deficient or frost-damaged leaf does not carry an infectious organism merely because it looks unhealthy. A virus, soil-borne pathogen or sporulating leaf lesion is a different risk. Use the disease library and local diagnostic help before classifying a large amount of material.
When you cannot distinguish the cause, choose the cautious route rather than using the compost pile as a test.
- Usually compostable: healthy residue, spent annuals and confirmed non-infectious damage without herbicide contamination.
- Keep out of a cool pile: confirmed or suspected infectious material that local guidance says to destroy or dispose of.
- Never assume: a warm centre does not prove every edge and fragment reached the required time and temperature.
- Check locally: burning and municipal green-waste rules vary; do not create an illegal or unsafe disposal method.
A hot pile needs evidence, not confidence
Pathogen reduction depends on temperature, duration, moisture, particle size and thorough mixing. A home heap that is occasionally warm is not the same as a managed process in which all material is turned through a verified hot zone.
If your local authority accepts diseased green waste into a controlled high-temperature stream, follow its instructions. Otherwise use household disposal or another route explicitly recommended for that problem.
Clean the route out of the garden
Bag or contain infectious material before carrying it past susceptible plants. Clean soil and debris from tools, then disinfect where the disease guidance calls for it. Do not leave rejected material beside the heap or along the garden boundary.
Record the affected bed and crop. The next useful action may be rotation, resistant varieties, volunteer removal or a watering change—not simply a cleaner autumn bed.
