Leaf wetness: the garden weather signal most forecasts omit

Rain, dew and irrigation can keep a leaf surface wet long after precipitation stops, giving some pathogens the infection period they need.

Treat leaf wetness as duration, not simply rain/no rain. A calm humid night, dew or dense canopy can keep foliage wet for hours without measurable rainfall. Combine likely wet hours with temperature and the biology of the specific disease; no single wetness threshold applies to every pathogen.

Wetness is a period, not an event

Rain can stop while leaves remain wet; dew can wet leaves with no rain at all. Disease models therefore combine the start and end of a wetting period with temperature. The number of hours required depends on the host and pathogen.

Garden Dream estimates favourable hours from forecast humidity, precipitation, dew-point proximity and disease-specific conditions. It does not directly measure water on your leaf.

  • Longer drying time: dense canopy, calm air, shade, cool humid nights and late overhead watering.
  • Shorter drying time: useful spacing, morning sun, air movement and soil-level irrigation.
  • Important exception: powdery mildew biology differs; free water can inhibit some species even while high humidity favours them.
  • Risk means conditions are favourable, not that a pathogen is present.

Check the garden, not only the graph

Look beneath the upper canopy shortly after sunrise. If inner leaves remain wet while exposed leaves are dry, the local canopy is producing a longer wetness period than the open-air forecast suggests. Note which beds dry last.

When risk is elevated, scout the most susceptible crops first and avoid handling wet plants. Photograph suspicious symptoms before removing tissue so the diagnosis can be checked.

Reduce wet hours without drying the roots

Water the root zone early in the day, keep supports and spacing open enough for airflow, and remove only the leaves that materially crowd the canopy. Do not respond by withholding needed root water: drought stress creates a different set of problems.

Use the disease page for the specific crop/problem pair. A generic humidity number should never replace a disease-specific model or a confirmed diagnosis.
