Should I water after rain? Read the water balance

Rainfall total is only one part of the decision; rooting depth, soil drainage, crop stage and recent water loss determine whether roots received enough.

Do not water simply because the surface looks dry—or skip watering simply because rain was recorded. Check moisture at root depth after drainage, compare recent rain with evapotranspiration, and give priority to crops in flowering, fruiting, head, bulb or root-enlargement stages. Delay irrigation when the root zone is still wet.

Rain recorded is not water stored

A short hard shower can run off or wet only the surface; gentle rain may move deeper. Sandy soil drains quickly, while compacted or heavy soil can remain saturated. Containers and rain-shadow beds behave differently from the nearest gauge.

Use Garden Dream's rainfall and reference evapotranspiration as a running balance, then confirm it with the soil. Weather data cannot see your texture, mulch, roots or irrigation history.

  • After heavy rain, allow roughly a day for free drainage before treating the reading as field capacity.
  • Check at representative root depth, not only the top centimetre.
  • Prioritize fruit set, head formation, bulb/root enlargement and newly germinating rows.
  • Avoid small automatic top-ups that keep the surface wet while roots remain shallow.

Use a simple field check

Push a finger, trowel or probe into the root zone away from the stem. Soil that forms a wet smear or releases water is not asking for irrigation. Soil that is cool and cohesive may still have useful moisture; loose dry soil at depth needs attention.

Repeat the check in the driest representative bed, a container and any covered area. Water where needed rather than applying one schedule to the whole garden.

Aim for consistency

Wide wet-dry swings can contribute to fruit cracking and blossom-end rot symptoms, while persistent saturation reduces root oxygen and increases leaching. The goal is a stable root zone, not the highest possible moisture reading.

Record meaningful irrigation and rain events. A few weeks of notes will reveal which beds dry first and which stay wet long after the forecast changes.
