About
Verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae) is a cool-season soil-borne wilt with a very wide host range including tomatoes, potatoes, maples and many trees, clogging vascular tissue and persisting in soil for over a decade.
Symptoms
V-shaped yellow wedges at leaf margins, wilting during the heat of the day, and tan-to-brown streaking in the wood when a stem is cut. Often progresses slowly over a season.
Organic Treatment
No cure; remove severely affected annuals. Keep woody plants vigorous with mulch and balanced watering. Solarise beds and rotate to non-hosts.
Chemical Treatment
No effective fungicide; manage with resistant varieties and soil health.
Prevention
Use resistant cultivars, rotate with cereals or grasses, avoid wounding roots, and do not replant susceptible species in known infested sites.
