Why are my plant leaves curling and distorted?
Distorted new growth means something interfered while the leaf was still expanding โ an insect feeding on it, a virus in the plant, or a chemical it should never have met. Once a leaf is distorted it stays that way, so judge any treatment on the leaves that open next.
The one observation that decides it
Check for insects first, since they are the common answer and the reversible one: turn the growing tip over and look for aphid colonies. If it is clean, look at the shape. Narrow, fern-like, twisted growth with spiralling stems is herbicide damage โ often from contaminated manure or drift, and it affects every plant in a patch regardless of species. Mottled colour combined with distortion is a virus. Thickened, puckered, red-purple leaves on a peach or nectarine in spring are peach leaf curl.

Yellow mosaic mottling and puckering of young leaves, which often become narrow and strap-like. Plants are stunted, flowers are streaked or malformed, and cucumber fruits are warty, pale and bitter.
Conditions: Spread by handling, insects or soil โ not weather-triggeredFirst move: Remove affected material nowLeaves become narrow, fern-like and twisted, and stems spiral or fuse. Growing tips cup downwards and fruit is distorted or absent. Unlike a virus there is no mottling or mosaic โ the colour stays normal and every plant in the affected area is hit at once.

Growing tips distort or die back, young leaves are small with hooked, scorched or curled edges, and hearts of lettuce and cabbage brown internally. In fruit it shows as blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers and as bitter pit in apples.
