Practical notes
Plant early — September, well before tulips — so the roots are down before winter. Rodents and deer leave them alone, which makes them the safest bulb to naturalise in grass.
Knowing when to pick
Pull the stem rather than cutting it. Stand cut daffodils alone for a day — their sap kills other flowers in a mixed vase.
Storing the crop
Leave the leaves for six weeks after flowering — never knot or cut them, or next year’s flower fails. Bulbs can stay in the ground for years.
Crop rotation
No strict rotation group — still avoid replanting into the same soil year after year.
