When to plant Lawn
Calendar windows
Dates shift with your latitude — they are calculated from your local last-spring-frost date, not from a fixed calendar.
At a glance
Overwinters outdoors in a temperate garden.
Practical notes
Sow when the soil holds above 10°C — late summer beats spring, because the grass establishes without competing against germinating weeds. Rake to a fine tilth, sow at 30–35 g per square metre, and keep it damp for three weeks.
Knowing when to pick
First cut at 8 cm, taking only the top third, with the blades set high and sharp. Never remove more than a third of the height in one mow, at any point in the lawn’s life.
Storing the crop
Leave the clippings on the lawn in dry weather — they return most of the nitrogen the grass needs. Scarify and aerate in autumn, and raise the cutting height for winter.
Crop rotation
Heavy nitrogen users — follow with legumes or feed the bed well.
