Practical notes
It needs a long season and constantly moist, rich soil — it will not swell in a dry summer. Rub off side roots and lower leaves in late summer to get a clean, round bulb.
Knowing when to pick
Lift from October at 8–12 cm across. It takes light frost happily, so leave it out as long as you can.
Storing the crop
Trim the leaves and store in damp sand at 0–4°C for three to five months.
Crop rotation
Rotate away from carrots and their relatives for 3 years to break the carrot fly cycle.
