Practical notes
Direct-sow only — it has a taproot and hates being moved. It bolts fast in heat, so sow a short row every three weeks. Keep it well away from carrots, which it cross-pollinates.
Knowing when to pick
Cut the feathery leaves any time from six weeks. For pickling, take the whole flower head just as the seeds form and are still green.
Storing the crop
Two or three days fresh. Freeze the leaf; dry the seed heads over paper and store the seed for a year.
Crop rotation
Rotate away from carrots and their relatives for 3 years to break the carrot fly cycle.
