Practical notes

Plant it where you want it forever and nowhere near the vegetable garden โ€” walnut roots release juglone, which poisons tomatoes, potatoes and apples within the drip line. Grafted trees crop in five years, seedlings in fifteen.

Knowing when to pick

Gather from the ground daily once the green husks split โ€” nuts left lying go mouldy and stain black within a couple of days of rain.

Storing the crop

Husk, wash and dry for two to three weeks somewhere airy until a kernel snaps rather than bends. In shell they keep a year in a cool room.

Crop rotation

No strict rotation group โ€” still avoid replanting into the same soil year after year.
