When to plant Quince
Calendar windows
Dates shift with your latitude — they are calculated from your local last-spring-frost date, not from a fixed calendar.
At a glance
Takes frost; can go out weeks before the last one.
Practical notes
Self-fertile, undemanding and beautiful in blossom — one tree is enough. It fruits on the tips of the previous year’s growth, so prune lightly or you cut the crop off.
Knowing when to pick
Leave it as late as you dare — until the down rubs off and the fruit turns deep gold and scents the whole garden. Pick before the first hard frost.
Storing the crop
Keeps two to three months in a cool room. Store it alone — the perfume taints everything stored nearby.
Crop rotation
Permanent planting: never replant a rose-family plant straight into its own old site.
